Hi! I am the Master of Learning and (teaching) of course. I am multilingual and can speak various different languages. My home county is the United States, but I can speak a numerous amount of languages such as English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic. I have been all over Europe, South America, and Africa. My superpowers include being kind, helping others, including everyone, and making my classroom a safe space for everyone. My classroom will always be a safe space, especially for my ENL students. For this activity, my focus subject is ELA. I noticed in the past when I previously helped out ENL students, they had trouble writing. They would have trouble putting the words in the right sequence. Each and everyday students will write in their journal, and those who have trouble will sit and the writing table with me the Master of Learning and she’ll give them a mini-lesson on how to place the words correctly, so the sentence makes sense. Ms. Mal will spend 15-20 minutes...

Week 7: Tongue Tied Reflections

Prospectus (pg.22) Reflection: This poem made me very sad when I read it. This boy grew up on a reservation living in an adobe house with no running water. He would feed on his mother’s breast, drink goatmilk and cornmeal, and some days without food. I couldn't tell the way the boy was treated but the way he lived was very sad. He ate with his fingers washed his hair with yucca root and only spoke his language.  There was not much around where he lived, besides puppies, lizards, and the lamb. He hopes to learn English one day and I hope so too. Learning Silence (pg.23) Reflection: This poem was an interesting one to read. In the first paragraph, I could feel how scared Maria was even though she’s only in 1 st grade. Maria was afraid of everything from raising her and, asking for the bathroom pass, the bigger kids, but especially Miss Barton who does not like her. It seemed like Maria was a good student, but I feel so bad because she is terrified of her teacher. I r...

Week 4-Assignment 2

The article The Future of Education is in Two Languages was a very interesting read. In the article, Fabice talks about three objectives leaning towards bilingualism. The first objective is to espouse cultures specific to families and linguistic communities and promote this cultural heritage as an important part of the mosaic of society. The second objective is to help facilitate reconciliation between parents and schools and encourage a fruitful dialogue between parents, school administrators, and educational professions. The third and final objective is to promote a social, economic, and cultural environment that is respectful of all and helps to bridge the gulfs that divide us today. These objectives and very important and it needs more attention when it comes to bilingual education.  " Bilingual education means different things to different people. Some want access to English and the equal opportunity it provides. Others want to sustain their heritage and utilize bilingual ed...

Week 2-Assignment 3

Assignment #3 Tongue Tied: Santa Ana: Stories about the lives of multilingual children in public #12 schools. Wascicula ya he? (Do you speak English?) (pp. 56-63); From the Woman Warrior (pp. 78-81); Mother Tongue (pp. 169-73); My Hawai’I pp179-83) Reflection Wasciula ya he? (Do you speak English?) was a very interesting chapter to read. The girl didn’t know how to write a composition in English until she left the government school and entered seventh grade at a small school run by nuns. She was able to learn how to read in a program they called the reading lab. That is great because a lot of children who have trouble speaking English have trouble reading or learning how to. Having a program is great because they learn how to read. The second-year Delphine was at the Cahtholic school she was given a teacher that was an artist. He was a mentor to her and helped in any way he could. This story was inspiring to read and glad that I understood what Delphine went through. From the...

Dariel Chernoff Week 2-Assignment 2 Chapter 7: Bilingualism and Cognition Assignment #2 Study Activities Find one or more examples of an IQ test. Examine the content of the test and locate any items which you think will be unfair to bilinguals in your region. Examine both the language and the cultural content of the IQ test.  Answer: Question: Which of the following can be arranged into a 5-letter English word? a. H R G S T b. R I L S A c. T O O M T d. W Q R G S Answer: b. rails and c. motto This question could be difficult for someone who is bilingual because they might think the scrambled word is a word or the students can’t make a word with the scrambled letters. The content of the question is also in English so they might be confused about the word and the meaning of scramble. The IQ test is to test the IQ of the bilinguals in their stronger language or both languages. This was a disadvantage for the bilinguals because they were tested in ...

Introduction

Hello! My name is Dariel and I am 23 years old. During the year I work as a teaching assistant in a fourth-grade Special Education classroom. I love my job and working with kids so much. Teaching is my passion and I am looking forward to getting my Masters in Childhood Education with a Bilingual Extension! Some of my interests include: going to the beach, cooking, traveling, working with kids, riding my bike and so many more. I would have to say my parents are my role models. I say this because they have always pushed me to do my best and work hard. I wouldn't be who I am today because of them. I am so thankful to have them in my life. The best piece of advice I've been given is to always be kind to one another. Throughout my life, I've always been told to be kind to everyone and to respect everyone. If I could plan the ultimate vacation I would go to either Hawaii or New Zealand. I've always wanted to go to both places for such a long time because they are both beau...
